Black Friday is a day of unabashed, enthusiastic holiday spending. For some shoppers, it’s heaven. For others, it’s hell.

The day after Thanksgiving has become a launching point for religious-based campaigns against consumerism, most notably Rev. Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping—a group that brought its Shopocalypse campaign to Chicago a few years back and has named today “Buy Nothing Day.”
This year, a local Baptist church is keeping away from the Michigan Avenue madness to make another point—draw attention to the lack of funding to city schools. From Black Friday to Boxing Day (Dec. 26), Salem Baptist Church on the South Side will join the Save our Schools campaign, boycotting businesses and restaurants in downtown Chicago.
