The 21st-century take on Thanksgiving leaves many torn—between the traditional holiday’s warm fuzzies like family, food and gratitude and the guilt from the modern Native American side of the story, one that puts our Puritan founders in a bad (err, massacre-y) light.
So this year, bring a little bit of p.c. cultural awareness to the table.
The Gene Siskel Film Center, located downtown on North State Street, is showing a 1961 documentary on Native Americans in Los Angeles. The movie, “The Exiles,” has been restored and re-released. It will be shown at 6:15 and 7:45 pm Monday through Wednesday this week.
Or visit the Trickster Gallery in nearby Schaumburg. A project of the Chicago American Indian Center, the gallery—open Tuesday through Friday—displays contemporary Native American art.
